Seated in Christ

“[God] raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” Ephesians 2:6

“In Christ” is a term that describes our position of surrender to Jesus Christ, making us one with Him.  This coupling union makes it possible for us to be reconciled back into relationship with God.

God made us to sit together with Jesus in the heavenly places. Obviously we are not physically in the heavens with Jesus. The “heavenly places” is a term describing the spirit world around us.

In Christ, God “raised us up together.” Once the debt of sin had been paid, God raised Jesus up from the dead. God gave Him new life, not just in body, but also in spirit. We are still living on the earth, so we have not experienced a physical resurrection yet; however, we have been raised up in spirit, by receiving the transformation of new life within.

In Christ, God “made us sit together.” Where is Jesus sitting? In Ephesians 1:20 it tells us that Jesus has been seated at God’s right hand in the heavenly places. The “right hand” of God is reference to the power and authority of God. Ephesians 1:21, 22 says that Christ has been seated “far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come, and He [God] put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church.” To be seated is to be established, and Christ has been set in a place of spiritual authority over the enemy.

We are positioned in Christ, so together, we have a partnership with Christ over the enemy. We are one in union with Christ. In Ephesians 1:22, 23 it tells us that we are one body with Christ, with Him being the head. This illustration of our relationship with Christ shows us that we are one with Him and that we are to do His works. Our partnership with Christ is not only a right, but it is also a responsibility to take dominion over the enemy who is at work to stop the kingdom of God from advancing. Because we are in union with Christ, the power of God backs us up to be able to do whatever God leads us to do, nothing stopping us!

Application: When the enemy comes against you, he is also coming against Christ. Take authority over the enemy with the name of Jesus and the power of God will stop him!
