In our reading today we see the Lord not only fulfilled His promise to bring Jacob back to his family in peace (Genesis 33; 28:20-22). God is faithful. When Jacob’s son murdered all the men in Shechem for what happened to Dinah Genesis 35:25-29), God spoke to Jacob and instructed him to return to Bethel, the place where his relationship with God began (Genesis 35:1; Genesis 28:1-22). Jacob then demands that all of his family put away their idolatrous ways and sanctify themselves and they gave Jacob all of their idols and all of their earings of their idolatry and Jacob hid them under a tree by Shechem (Genesis 35:2-4). The LORD responded by putting the fear of God gripped the hearts of all those in the neighboring cities and they did not pursue after Jacob’s family (Genesis 35:5).
The disciples of Jesus were directed to go only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel (Matthew 10:5, 6). We are not so limited, On the day he ascended into heaven Jesus told the first members of the New Covenant Church, “But you shall receive power, after that the Holy Spirit comes upon you: and you shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in Judea, and in Samaria, and to the uttermost part of the earth (Act 1:8).” .The Father is desiring that we go to all those around us and share the good news.
