Jehovah Shammah: The Lord is There

“The LORD is there.” Ezekiel 48:35

A name in the Bible has meaning, describing the character or purpose of a person or place. Jehovah Shammah (Strongs 3074) is a Hebrew word for God; Jehovah means “the Lord,” and Shammah means “there.” The name Shammah comes from the root sham, used to describe location and time. It also means to “be in” a place, thing, matter, or circumstance. The name Jehovah Shammah is used only once in the Bible, in Ezekiel 48:35, and it is a name for the new city of Jerusalem, which will be in place after the second coming of Jesus Christ. Using this name gives meaning to the desire of God to be with and in the midst of His people.

When someone genuinely loves you, they want to be where you are. Genuine love doesn’t come and go; true love wants to be with you always, to be together. If there is a barrier to get to you, true love will not stop until it breaks through that barrier. Real love is relentless love. God’s love for you is so great that it broke through the barrier of death to reach you. God’s love for you is so great that God watches you through the night and catches the first glimpse of your eyes opening to a new day. God’s love is so great that He is always there for you.

They want to be there with you, and they want to be there for you. As a mother, I wanted to be present for my kids when they were growing up – not just because I wanted to be with them, but also because I wanted to be the one to meet their needs. I enjoyed raising my children. As a wife, I enjoy bringing a meal to my husband. As a co-pastor, I enjoy encouraging our people. Real love finds delight in serving the ones we love. It is our privilege and honor to do so. God feels the same way about us. It is our Father’s joy to be there to meet your needs. He wants to be the One to do it for you. He is there.

His name is Jehovah Shammah. When God is your Lord, you will never be fatherless. He is always there for you. He is not missing. He has not abandoned you. He has not left you weak and alone to make it on your own. He is your strength, and He is there with you and for you.

Jehovah Shammah will also be in a place, a thing, a matter, or circumstance. When you are in obedience to God, God will be in what you are doing. He will be in your efforts, your ministry, your family, your church, your career, and anything else that concerns you. His anointing, His power, His resources, and His presence – are all THERE for you.

Application: Another meaning for Jehovah Shammah is “The Lord your Companion.” Don’t live today on your own. Invite God to live it with you.
