Romans 8:1-18

Yesterday we talked about “the law of sin and death” (Romans 7:15-23), how that every person is dealing with it and we talked about the solution. I heard a very wise minister say that the law of sin and death is like the law of gravity, you cannot stop it from working, they are both established laws. In the case of gravity you cannot stop it from operating but you can supercede it if you apply a higher law, the law of lift, with that law you can overcome the law of gravity. He said that in the same way, the law of sin and death can be overcome by activating a higher law, the law of the Spirit. “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death “ (Romans 8:2). When Jesus died on the cross  “[God] condemned sin in the flesh [subdued, overcame, deprived it of its power over all who accept that sacrifice] (Romans 8:3 Amplified Classic). When you got born again you accepted that sacrifice, so the law of sin and death has been deprived of its power over you. But it is not automatic, it does not just happen, you and I have a part to play because we are in Covenant with God. God did His part by sending Jesus to die on the cross. We need to keep our minds focused on the things of the Spirit and not on the things of the flesh (Romans 8:5, 6). Paul actually says that a mind focused on the things of the flesh is hostile to God (Romans 8:7). We need to develop a prayer life, a Bible study life and be consistently meditating on the Scripture. Paul writes that meditating on the things of the Spirit is life and peace (Romans 8:6), and the main reason for that is you are walking in the Spirit and free from the law of sin and death.

Psalm 79-81

In our reading today we have a passage that is 180 degrees apart from today’s reading in Romans: “Psalm 81:11-14 [Amplified Classic] But My people would not hearken to My voice, and Israel would have none of Me. 81:12 So I gave them up to their own hearts’ lust and let them go after their own stubborn will, that they might follow their own counsels. 81:13 Oh, that My people would listen to Me, that Israel would walk in My ways! 81:14 Speedily then I would subdue their enemies and turn My hand against their adversaries.” Saints, even under the Old Covenant God promised His Covenant people deliverance from their enemies if they walked in obedience to His word. Can you see the frustration in His heart, “Oh that my people would listen to me.” Let us, as faithful Covenant people walk in obedience to His ways. Our deliverance has already been won, we just need to listen to our Father and walk in His ways!
