Mark 14:51-72

Jesus faces the Sanhedrin. The charge brought against Jesus was Jesus’ statement that He would tear the temple down and in three days build it back up again. He was referring to His own body. They were false witnesses, saying they heard Jesus say that He was going to tear down the physical temple and build a new one. That was false. Jesus never said He would tear down the Jewish temple. However, those who heard it came to their own conclusions. Have you ever known God to allow people to come to their own conclusions? I have. It takes a searching, yielded heart to receive revelation from God. So often we can miss it if we fail to humble ourselves.

Deuteronomy 23-25

Moses continues to share social laws from God. In Deuteronomy 25:3, God tells the Hebrews not to whip a man more than 40 times, so the Israelites would only whip someone up to 39 times to make sure they didn’t go over 40.

When Jesus was whipped before the crucifixion, He was not scourged under Jewish law; Jesus was whipped by the Romans. The Romans did not have a law to limit the strikes. The Roman scourging whip was called a flagrum or flagellum that had lead tips or pieces of bone. This torture was meant to weaken a criminal so he would not have strength to resist the final execution.

In Isaiah 53:5, it says by His stripes we are healed. In 2 Peter 2:24, it says, “By His stripes you were healed (past tense).” Jesus provided our healing when He took those stripes and died on the cross. It’s done. He doesn’t have to do it again and again. It’s done! Hallelujah!
