Leviticus 13 is an extensive list from God to Moses [Israel] on how to deal with skin diseases. Actually Leviticus chapters 13 & 14 are two parts of a whole. They were followed for hundreds and hundreds of years. These purification laws were instituted to prevent skin diseases from spreading among God’s people. Skin diseases, along with all other sickness and disease, began when Adam and Eve chose to disobey God. All of these maladies are part of the curse and we were redeemed from them when we made Jesus our Lord (Galatians 3:13, 14).
Although many Old Testament passages concerning prophecies about Jesus’ crucifixion and death could be cited in reference to our passage in Matthew today, let’s look at two Old Testament prophecies about another person in today’s reading: the betrayer Judas. Jesus said of himself, “The Son of man goeth as it is written of him.” In that same spirit, Judas was also going as it was written of him. The following prophecies are amazing in their accuracies and show that the exact price of the betrayal would be 30 pieces of silver (Zechariah 11:12, 13), and the fact that the betrayer of Christ would be a familiar friend (Psalm 41:9). So, in today’s passage Jesus sees into the heart of his friend Judas and says that it would have been better for Judas if he had not been born.
