El Olam: The Everlasting God

“(Abraham)…called on the name of the Lord, the Everlasting God.” Genesis 21:33

Abraham is the first one recorded to call God El Olam, meaning “The Everlasting God” or “The Eternal God.” It could also be translated “The God of Eternity.” Olam is a Hebrew noun that means everlasting, eternal, ancient, forever, always, continuous existence, perpetual, indefinite or unending future, and eternity.” The word is used to refer to both time in the past and time in the future.

Think about it – this God we serve isn’t a novice. He’s always been, He’s always going to be, and He is right now! Whatever you are facing right now, He can handle it. What you are facing now might be new to you, but not to God.

Isaiah 40:28 “Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable.”

When you need to call someone to help you, call on someone with experience. God is qualified to meet your need. He has been “there” and done “that.”

Psalm 90:2 “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting, you are God.”

Not only has God existed for all time, but He has also reigned as supreme authority for all time. In Psalm 29:10 David says, “The LORD sat enthroned at the Flood, and the LORD sits as King forever (see also Jeremiah 10:10; Psalm 93:2).” God has never lost His edge; He’s never lost His place as Lord, and He never will!

Not only is God everlasting, but the qualities of God’s character are also unending. In Psalm 103:17 it says that God’s mercy is from everlasting to everlasting – thank God! In I Corinthians 13:13 it says that God’s love never fails! God doesn’t change. He is good, and always will be!

Application: Our Everlasting God has created us to live forever, and we will continue to exist even after our body dies. For those who receive salvation through Christ, we will spend eternity with God. For those who ignore salvation, they will spend eternity separated from God in eternal punishment. Ask God to give you opportunities to share the message of salvation with someone today.
