Proverbs 15-16

In our reading today we have a verse I have been meditating on the last few days. Proverbs 16:17 “The highway of the upright is to depart from evil: he that keepeth his way preserveth his soul.” All through Scripture we have the word picture of life as a road, a path we are traveling on. This theme is repeated a few times in Proverbs. In the 23rd verse of chapter 6 we find, “For the commandment is a lamp and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life” In Proverbs 10:17 Solomon writes, “He is in the way of life that keepeth instruction: but he that refuseth reproof erreth.” It is easy to see that if we are on the road of the upright we are  constantly making choices to follow the word of God and the Spirit of God and not our own desires. Jesus said “broad is the way that leads to destruction and narrow is the way that leads to life’ (Matthew 7:13, 14). Saints, lets us stay on the highway of the upright.

2 Corinthians 1

In our reading today we have Paul telling the Corinthians in his second letter of a circumstance in Asia where he and his travelling companions were in a situation where they thought they were all going to die. 2 Corinthians 1:8 “For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life:” Though they had all thought they had received a death sentence, they all agreed that they should trust their God who raises the dead. “But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead:” (2 Corinthians 1:9). Hey, if God can raise the dead, he can either raise us up or He can deliver us. The passage goes on to say that God did deliver them from great death. “Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us (2 Corinthians 1:10). The passage conveys the picture that if God had not delivered them they would not have lived. Our God is a deliverer. He delivered us from hell and he delivers us every day if we trust in Him.
