“But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises.” Hebrews 8:6
Before looking at the blessings of the covenant, let’s look at the Covenant Maker. What we know about what He has and what He does is directly related to who He is. The Bible often repeats this phrase, “The Lord is good and His mercy endures forever.” Aren’t you glad our God is not bad with a temper that lasts forever? He’s good! He has an endless supply of mercy! This good, merciful God loves us with a deep, relentless love. His desire is for us to know Him, yield ourselves to Him, and experience His blessings and His glory.
The greatest blessings God offers are found in knowing Him. Through any situation we face on earth, it is a blessing to have His Presence journeying with us and helping us walk through life in victory. Our relationship with God is the biggest covenant blessing we could have!
In addition, we need to reprogram our minds to understand the type of life God created us for. The Bible says we were created for His glory. Think of the Garden of Eden. Along with knowing God’s presence, did they have sickness or poverty or bondages? No. Think about Heaven. Will there be sickness or poverty or bondages? No. What about the life in between the start and the finish?
Deuteronomy 28 describes the blessings of the Old Covenant for those who enter into it through faith and obedience. Chapter 28 also describes a curse for the Jews who refused to obey. The Bible tells us that the New Covenant is based on better promises for anyone who receives Christ as savior. The promises in Deuteronomy 28 just give us a glimpse into all the blessings God has for us. These blessings are not based on our works in keeping the Jewish law, but they are based on the love of God and our love for one another.
In the New Testament, covenant blessings are seen in the ministry Christ had on the earth. Healing, deliverance, provision, protection, and other miracles were demonstrations of God’s will and blessing for us. New Testament books also use the phrase “in Christ” to describe what He provided for us. The blessings of the covenant are blessings that God not only wanted us to have, but blessings that Jesus paid for us to have. We should never doubt His desire for us to experience His blessings.
Application: Read Deuteronomy 28. Write down the blessings the covenant. Thank God that those blessings and more apply to you today!
